Recognize that an economic system can only be viable if it reconciles its hankering for fast, infinite growth, with an ecological paradigm's far slower timelines to replenish its finite resources. Money cannot grow faster than natural capital, when it does, it stops being anchored in reality. Ecological economics is a transdisciplinary and interdisciplinary field that discerns that the economy, like any other subsystem on the planet, cannot grow forever. And if you were to explore this metaphor of the organism further, organisms grow for a period and then they begin to age and die, perhaps the problem lies in how we have failed to model our economic paradigm to come full circle from birth to death. If we seed economic cycles that bioengineer the market place to reflect living systems, we would witness organic efficiency and balance in our daily operations, as seen with "cradle to cradle." See how much information is available, and how open an organization is about where your money goes once passed to them. Our mentality needs to shift out of "bail outs" and 'hand outs" into the modality embraced by "impact investments" where an ROI is anticipated because people investing in the opportunity believe it is going to be self-sustaining and successful in its roll out strategy. Investing asks for the accountability and metrics that donating does not. When I work with non-profits on communications outreach nowadays I look at ways in which the communications and outreach I develop for them, truly empowers them in the eyes of their "donor base" as a critical investment opportunity, worth backing.
